Listening for God

I'm trying
I really am
and sometimes it seems I hear a word or
two
but more often than not
there is silence.
We sing
“God spoke this word in days of old
he speaketh still”
yet
unless he is using
a frequency that is
inaudible to the human ear
nothing seems to be coming through.
How long will the silence remain?
How long before
there comes some break
in the quietness
for a subliminal message
to crackle into consciousness?
I'm listening
straining my ears for a whisper
a murmur
a word
attentive alert awake
How long Lord, how long?
